Hua Cheng

Hua Cheng is a character from Tian Guan Ci Fu, or Heaven Official’s Blessing, which is a book series and donghua. This story truly captured my heart and Hua Cheng was a bucket list cosplay for a long time.

This cosplay took over a month to complete, and about $500 in materials. I made the black undershirt, red overshirt, skirt, belt, body jewelry, earrings, vambraces, arm sleeves, styled the wig, and added the bells and chains to the boots myself. The only items I bought as-is were the eyepatch and parasol. The pants worn underneath I already owned.

One of my favorite parts of this cosplay is that it has an audio element. Whenever I move, you can hear the bells jingling from the boots and the belt, and it captures Hua Cheng’s aura really well. I hope to revisit this cosplay one day and re-create a more accurate hanfu or robe for him (I ended up doing a shirt/skirt combination for him, hidden by the belt).

These photos were taken with my iPhone 13 Pro with the help of a friend at the Chinese Gardens in Portland, Oregon.
